Please don't misread my point.
Whether we like it or not, it's a fact that the majority in Kashmir is under brutal suppression by the State. Their credentials for loyalty to the Indian State are being repeatedly doubted as though they deserve no more equal protection of law, equality before law and human rights as envisaged by the Indian Constitution. This is exemplified in Afsal Guru's case and in many other instances, where most of the formalities relating to one's right to prove innocence in the crime/crimes charged were simply by passed.
My point in this context, was far from contending that Nationhood and Patriotism itself were extra-legal. I like to repeat therefore, that the Hinu-ised, manipulated ,communal and non-secular and extra-constitutional brand of nationalism has has already enstranged the majority community (Muslims) there in Kashmir.
This is not to be taken as an apologist's attempt to defend fatwas or ulema rule. On the contrary, I would argue that any selective reading and propagation of reports from Kashmir must be seen in the light of nefarious attempts in the mass media to demonize Muslims as anti-national. If one is genuinely interested to empathize with the plight of Kashmiri people, it is imperative to go beyond the Hinu-ised concept of patriotism and be informed from all available sources.Fourteen questions on The Indian Parliament attack published by Arundhati Roy, volumes of reports archived on the enormous proportions of Human Rights Violations in Kashmir valley might warrant our attention. Otherwise, one will only be contributing to,and even help proliferating the violence and hate generated out of the Kashmir issue.
